No. of children in education: 2
No. of people in household: 6
Before being an LSP: She worked as a homemaker, a job without pay and thankfulness.
What was wrong: 1. Husband had no permanent job, worked in temporary jobs off and on. 2. No farmland to support the family of two daughters and ailing parents. 3. Lack of suitable job for her in the village. 4. Knows how to read and write, therefore tried providing private tuition to village children, but no guarantee of income due to irregular tuition fee payment by the very poor families.
What attracted to this job: 1. Relationship building with the community for a good cause and 2. Income from a regular source for the family.
Impact of her job: 1. She has been encouraging her daughters to continue to study 2. Regular income for family, 3. She recently got one of them admitted to Calcutta Medical College for training in 3-year course of “Nursing” for which she has saved a major portion of her earnings from this job.
Typical one day as an LSP: 1. Visits old farmers for service and medicines, takes references for new farmers, 2. Village meetings with new farmers and new people in new areas, 3. Makes acquaintances in new areas for motivating new farmers.
Impact noticed in the home-farmers’ houses: 1. She is seeing better nutrition of families/children improving with eggs and meat 2. Women, elderly and disabled adults now feel more empowered and confident because they have some income of their own.
How can we improve our programme: By providing additional feed and medicines for the chickens for at least 1-2 months.
A short quote from the LSP: Working for Nirdhan has given me a stable income for my family and more importantly I have been able to save for sending my daughter to enroll into the nursing course which will give her an excellent opportunity to settle her career in the future. She has also worked in Nirdhan for a few months and saved every penny for her admission into the course. She is very indebted to Nirdhan for giving her the opportunity to fulfil her dreams which she could not think of even in the recent past.
