Souren is a 75-year-old construction worker who has three adult children and a wife. He lives in one of the villages at Familia. While he had a regular job, he sent his children to school and college and managed to run his family’s expenses. But a year ago he had a kidney problem and lost his job. His children migrated to the city to look after themselves – leaving their parents in the village with no source of income. Souren has no land of his own neither can he work as a farm labourer due to his illness. His wife needs to see the doctor regularly due to several health problems.
Souren heard about the Nirdhan poultry programme during a village meeting as well as through his neighbor. He registered for the programme nine months ago and took the training. He has taken a total of four toolkits. Some are laying eggs and some he has sold for meat. Not only is he able to manage the expenses of his family but also save some money for their treatment. He is extremely excited about increasing the capacity of his low-cost farm. No longer does he repent that his children have abandoned him. He says, “This is something I can do myself and need not depend on anybody else, this is my freedom, I am finally free of all my worries and poverty”. His wife is proud of him and actively participates in taking care of the chickens.
