World Book Day 5th March 2020
An initiative of Nirdhan Development and Microfinance
Poverty has and will always be the central threat to education. Core to our organisations belief structure is the thought that education plays a significant role in seeking to close the gaps in local communities between people in different socioeconomic circumstances. Statistically only 27% of India’s total population is Illiterate. However, “functional illiteracy” obscures the real numbers. functional illiteracy is the inability to manage daily living and tasks that requires reading skills beyond the basic level. A person who is functionally illiterate naturally will have less success with regard to career opportunities. Illiteracy further correlates with underemployment, poverty, crime, and substandard health and nutrition.
To do our bit in the quest to achieve a more literate India, with your help we attempted to augment substantially to the humble library at Familia School.
Familia is an English Medium School that works to provide qualitative and comprehensive education for the children of nearby villages and small towns such as Haringhata,Nagarukhra and Barajaguly. The Library was inaugurated successfully on the 5th of march with an official ceremony. There was a prayer song sung by the children, followed by the ceremonial lighting of a lamp. Shri K.C Thomas- Director and Founder of the school – and Shrimati Maitrey Nandi – Principal- spoke a few words encouraging not just the students but the teachers as well to make full use of the library,
LITERACY ISN’T JUST ABOUT READING, WRITING, AND COMPREHENSION. IT’S ABOUT CULTURE, PROFESSIONALISM, AND SOCIAL OUTLOOK- TAYLOR ELLWOOD
